What to do when you lock your keys inside your car!
For starters do not break your window or call the police (Unless an infant is locked in the car and temperatures are high). This is one subject that I should expand on. I get about 6 calls a year and people say I need a locksmith NOW and I ask them the issue and they say they have locked their infant or baby in the car. The caller asks how long it will take for us to arrive. If I am close I will take the call but if I am far away (5 minutes or more) and temperatures are high I will get their information and advise they call 911 for help and I tell them I will be in route as well incase emergency services are slower than me. If I get there first I open the door for them. If it is hot outside call 911 if you lock your child in the car and the air is not on. I your car is running and air is on the child is pretty safe so us your judgement on that.
DO NOT BOTHER CALLING TH POLICE FOR FREE DOOR OPENING
The police have a policy against opening your door or getting you in to your car unless it is a life or death emergency or someone is in physical danger otherwise. They used to do this for people back in the 80’s and 90’s but many police officers would accidentally damage cars so they stopped the practice. Also police have crime to fight and emergencies to attend to, You being late for dinner or work is not an emergency to them.
What you should do:
- Check all doors.
- Double check your pockets and bags
- Look around the ground near your doors and right under the car
- Make sure windows are NOT down (Duh!) it has happened!!
- Call a family member to see if they have a spare key
- If you have exhausted all of these options – It is time, to call a LOCKSMITH
- Be prepared to spend $50-$90 depending on how far you are from them and time of day or night.
- Wait patiently – They are on the way!
