Getting “locked keys” out of cars makes up for more than half the calls we get every week. Locking your keys inside your vehicle is common and it doesn’t make you “dumb” or “Stupid” (I hear people say this a lot about themselves). Accidents happen even to the most cautious motorists and key handlers! I have been a locksmith for 15 years and I have personally locked my keys in the car 2 or 3 times over the past couple of years! Luckily I had the means to get back in without calling out for help. One time I unlocked my chevy tahoe with a plastic spatula (Used As A Wedge) and a metal “bendable” curtain rod. … I do not recommend this as you can damage your vehicle using the wrong tools…
People always tell me they with they hid a key under the car in one of those magnetic key-hide-boxes. I usually tell them that they are not real safe unless you get real creative on where you put it and go through some trouble hiding it in a very obscure place.
Here are 5 places/Ideas of where to hide or keep a spare car key
- (My Favorite) Using duct tape or gorilla tape – Get a screwdriver and remove your front or rear license plate – Secure a single “DOOR KEY” or Key with the tape and put the plate back on. It will stay forever and is protected from the elements. If you lock your keys in the car you can always find something laying around to remove a screw or 2… You can use a dime, pocket knife, fork, knife, drink tab, or a proper screwdriver. Someone has something nearby you can borrow. This is a safe spot to hide a key not many people think of this place nor would they go through the hassle of removing your plate to burglarize your car.
- Magnetic Key Hideaway boxes. We have all seen them – They work but hid them some where very hard to reach – Get deep up under your car ad attach on the top side of a non moving part away from the direct heat of your exhaust.
- Gas cap door – You could put a spare in the gas cap door area – Not the safest but a door key would not allow vehicle theft.
- A flat door key can be placed under the sole of your favorite shoes (mostly men as women ted to wear a lot of different shoes) place a key under the sole or padding in your work boots or shoe. Use a flat “door key” you will not notice it is there until you need it!
- Keep a spare car door or car key in your desk at work, Your gym locker, in your wallet, in your home, with your household members, at home (with someone you can call).
